I have been a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia at Addenbrooke's Hospital since 1998. I qualified at the University of Dundee in 1986 and undertook postgraduate training in Norwich, Cambridge and Sheffield. This included research at Addenbrooke's Hospital and Cambridge University involving anaesthetic agents and prevention of liver cell injury. I was accredited as a specialist in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia by the Royal College of Anaesthetists in 1996 and hold full registration with the General Medical Council.

As an Intensivist, I am responsible for the care of critically ill patients from all specialties in medicine and surgery except for cardiac and neurosurgery. The Unit I work on is a national and international centre for of transplant surgery/medicine and liver disease.  I have many years experience anaesthetising patients for all branches of surgery but particularly for major orthopaedic surgery (especially of the lower limb), and abdominal, gynaecological, breast, endocrine and urological surgery.  This includes the use of local anaesthetic techniques with or without general anaesthesia or sedation.  When needed, I also care for patients in the postoperative period in specialised areas in the hospital such as the High Dependency Unit or Intensive Care Unit.

My current research interests are related to critically ill patients and those undergoing major surgery.  My publications include original scientific papers, book chapters and review articles  I have also published a CD ROM lecture on organ transplantation. I am Director of a national course training surgeons to care for the critically ill, and an Associate Lecturer of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Cambridge. I am also Tutor for the Intercollegiate Board for Training in Intensive Care Medicine.

I work at the BUPA Cambridge Lea and the Nuffield Hospital as well as Addenbrooke’s. I take part in a continuous audit programme and my work is appraised annually under the Medical Directorate at Addenbrooke's Hospital, as required by the General Medical Council.

I may be contacted through Mrs Pam Kinsey at Addenbrooke's Anaesthetists' Group Secretariat at the Nuffield Hospital, Trumpington Road, Cambridge, tel 01223 365605.
