This site gives information about the care provided by your consultant anaesthetist. It explains how you will be assessed to ensure a safe anaesthetic, what to do about medications, when you should stop food and drink before surgery and what to expect on the day of your operation. It also has information about preventing or minimising pain after surgery, possible side effects and risks of anaesthesia and about professional fees for private patients. A link to the patient information website of the Royal College of Anaesthetisits is also provided. Click on headings at the top of the page for details.
For patients with private health insurance fees for professional services are in general determined by agreement with the major insurers. We normally work to the fee schedule agreed with BUPA. However, some insurers have published reimbursement rates a little lower than BUPA's. Please note that we reserve the right to request the BUPA-approved fee, which can on occasion result in a modest excess to be paid by the patient. In practice this is rare but if you are concerned please check with your insurer.
For patients with a fixed price arrangement with the hospital, all professional fees are as stated in the agreement with the hospital and will not be altered.
If you have any concerns about your anaesthetic, before or after your operation, please contact Mrs Jacqui Walker at Addenbrooke's Anaesthetists' Group Secretariat at the Nuffield Hospital, Trumpington Road, Cambridge, tel 01223 365165. She will arrange for your anaesthetist to telephone you and to meet with you if necessary.
